Somua S 35

Review by David Harvey

The SOMUA S35 was a French cavalry tank of the Second World War. Built from 1936 until 1940 in a number of 430 to equip the armoured divisions of the Cavalry, it was for its time an agile medium tank, superior in armour and armament to its competitors. It was constructed from well-sloped cast armour sections, that however made it expensive to produce and difficult to maintain. After the defeat of France, captured S 35s were used during the war by the Axis powers.

The book

The soft cover book is a bilingual publication (French/English) that is published (I think) in conjunction with the Saumar Tank Museum. It is 50 pages long and has numerous B&W images of the vehicle in action as well as coloured images of the sole remaining working version at the Saumar Tank Museum.

The book starts off with a potted history of the amoured vehicles in France Post WWI then starts into the history if the S 35 itself. It touches on the development of the vehicle, it's history witht the French Army then the Germans and other users of them once they were captured or taken over on the surrender of the French.

The more interesting parts are the B&W images of it in service and the thirty pages of images of the real thing. These cover all parts of the vehicle including the interior and some of the engine area. The last few pages of this useful liyttle book contain some profiles of the AFV and more importantly some of the unit markings carried by the S35 whilst in French Service.

This is an interesting little book and would certainly be of use to someone modelling the S35 in any scale Between the B&W and colour images you would certainly be able to detail your model.

I reccomend this book for those interested in, or modelling the Somua S35.
