Highly Recommended

The instructions come in a 20 page colour and black and white booklet. As I have come to expect from something that Richard Hourigan mastered, this set is quite thorough and technical in it's layout and measurements. There are numerous reference images to work with so you can do the kit justice as they are well chosen. The B&W images and diagrams are also clear and useful. More reference images can be found in the AMI Walkarounds page. The last two pages of the instruction sheet is covering the paint schemes as supplied in the kit and how accurate they are.

The kit

The conversion components come securely packed in heat sealed packs and Ziploc bags for safety all contained in a solid white cardboard box. Each resin piece is nicely cast and has flash that is easily cleaned up. As with all resin components, the larger bits have resin casting plugs to be cut off, this is best done with a razor saw or in some fashion whilst wearing a dust mask to ensure you don't breath the resin dust in. The set contains some very fine and nicely detailed components, unfortunately this is a drawback as these small/fine components are packed in with larger ones and can be subject to breakage which would be a shame. The only other problem I have with the set is identifying what each piece is. The majority of the components are easy to work out but some of them take a bit of looking and thinking to sort out.

I also like the 'completeness' of this set as it comes with all the card, wire and rod required for most things that need to be scratchbuilt. This is not often seen in update sets and Red Roo is to be commended for it.

The set contains:
  • 1 x ring site (etched brass)
  • 1 x Bead site (etched brass)
  • 1 x Engine cowl
  • 1 x Engine mount
  • 2 x exhaust pipes
  • 1 x oil cooler duct
  • 8 x engine inter cylinder baffle
  • 9 x engine upper cylinder head baffle
  • 1 x 3D40 propeller (AEROCLUB)
  • 1 x HF radio transmitter
  • 1 x HF radio receiver
  • 1 x HF radio shelf
  • 1 x HF radio shelf right angle support
  • 2 x tail plane
  • 2 x elevator fairing
  • 1 x pilot head rest
  • 2 x cockpit steps
  • 1 x VHF aerial insulator
  • 1 x tail wheel mount rear fairing
  • 1 x compass mount for front cockpit
  • 1 x rear gun scarff ring
  • 1 x rear gun hoist
  • 1 x rear gun hoist trolley
  • 1 x rear gun hoist control valve
  • 1 x landing gear warning horn
  • 2 x storepedo
  • 2 x parachute packs (for storepedo)
  • 1 x HF trailing aerial mast
  • 6 inches .020in brass wire
  • 4 inches 0.015in x 0.020 plastic strip
  • 6 inches 0.012in soft wire for spark plug cables
  • 1 'V' shaped length of 0.012in stainless steel wire
  • 1 x Vickers Mk I G.O. Machine Gun

The images below show the Red Roo parts compared to the Special Hobby originals.

I would suggest that if/when you buy this conversion/update that you have the Special Hobby kit in hand and thoroughly read the instruction booklet and compare it to the parts. In this manner you will have a good understanding of what is required to use the set and use it to it's full potential. This is a very good set that requires no big cutting, modifying or scratchbuilding and as such is very 'modeller friendly'.

To that end I highly recommend this set for those interested in the Wirraway. I will be doing a build review hopefully in the near future.
