The release of the 1/48 Airfix Sea Fury has brought out a number of update sets, photoetch and decals sheets. BarracudaCast has joined in this with a few sets including an updated cockpit, updated engine cowling and this set - the metal undercarriage.

The parts

The metal components are cast nicely with minimal cast marks to remove as far as I can see and just the casting stub at the top of the main undercarriage a few small bits in the retracts and tail wheel leg, these should be easily cleaned up.

The resin components - the rear wheel and the retract stirrup, are also well done. The retract stirrups are very fine and I can just see at least one of them getting lost or flying off in to the carpet, thankfully there are spares included. You are provided four of the stirrups and only need one per leg so there are two left just in case.

There is also a very small instruction sheet that shows the points to add things and where they go. It took me a while to realise the difference between the retract stirrups (in resin) and the retracts (in brass) on the instructions as I was having a blonde moment. The retracts replace the kit components and need to be adjusted to fit the undercarriage as they may not be exactly fitting the location holes that are already there. As the brass is rather hard you have the choice of drilling the locating holes deeper to accept the location peg or just trim the peg to fit in length.

As can be seen in the images below the brass items are much nicer than the kit parts and have more finer detail and look the right size.

The Images

This is a very nice set that should add a little extra detail to your Sea Fury build. Is it 'needed'? Not really as the kit parts are not too bad and the completed model will not bend the kit legs due to weight but as with everything model related - it is up to you what you want to spend your money on and how far you will update a kit.

It is nice and will do what it says it will do with minimal work or clean up so I highly recommend this set.
