It was a return to winter for those that ventured along to the 28th annual South Australian Scale Model Expo, conducted by the South Australian Scale Modellers Association at the Christian Brother’s College Gym over the weekend of the 30th and 31st of October. However, the unseasonable cold and wet weather didn’t dampen the spirits of entrants and visitors alike and certainly didn’t discourage the large Melbourne based contingent who travelled to Adelaide for the weekend.
This year saw some 439 entries (up considerably from last year) entered by 101 contestants (including 12 junior entrants). The car modellers certainly made up for their lack of numbers last year with a resounding response for this year’s event although despite the fact that there were many 1:24 and 1:25 entries, there were no smaller scales represented and only a couple of large scale entries. The armour categories were also very strong this year whilst the aircraft sections continued to attract large numbers of contestants with the 1:48 scale Allied single engine props being particularly popular in 2010. Ship numbers were down somewhat and this was mainly attributed to the loss of well known and respected nautical modeller John Currie who passed away from cancer a few months ago.
Again, the standard was exceptionally high but this year, a record number of judges, including 18 novices, made light work of the mammoth task with all judging being completed by around 10.30 pm on the Saturday night. Best of Show for the 2010 expo was Mark Zielonka’s superb scratchbuilt SFM Junak M10 motorcycle, an article on which will appear in an up and coming edition of ModelArt.
Despite the inclement weather, good sized crowds availed themselves of the magnificent display of modelling excellence on show at the event – this in turn resulting in the large trade contingent, who were dispensing a whole host of modelling goodies being most satisfied with the weekend’s takings.
Once again the hard working troops from SAPMA (and there seemed to be more of them on hand this year) are to be congratulated on a very well conducted event and I’m sure we’ll see many of them at Model Expo next year as the bond between Victorian and South Australian modellers continues to strengthen. Besides, they will want to even up the score a little after the Vics took away a fair share of the ‘hardware’ at this year’s show. Well done guys and see you next year.
