M113A1 APC

1/35 Tamiya M113A1, ARN 134332 C/S 33B,
A Sqn, 3 Cav Regt and an M1A1 105mm howitzer

by Brian Richardson

Here's another I've finished recently, it's based on a South Vietnam carrier that was fitted with one of twenty Model 74C turrets that were obtained in 1966. These were only an interim solution to improving crew protection until the Cadillac Gage T50 turrets became available.

This track, ARN 134332 C/S 33B, A Sqd. 3 Cav. On 21 February 1967 hit a mine that killed the crew and wounded all the infantry carried in the rear. More information can be found in:

The Model

This is rebuild of a hand painted Tamiya that was given to me to try and recover. After a caustic soda bath to remove all the paint, the model was rebuilt using Eduard PE, Skybow tracks, a Verlinden turret and lots of bits from the spare box. I also decided to have the track towing an M1A1 105mm howitzer as per the photo on the cover of Mud and Dust.

The tracks were sometimes used to relocate the guns in FSB's to prevent Vietcong from targeting them during their attacks.

Tamiya acrylics took care of the O/D, Humbrol and oils were used for all hand painting and weathering. ARN and C/S came from Aussie Decals sheet A3 5001.
